Update on barramundi fishery reform
The NT Government has committed to removing commercial gillnets from the barramundi fishery and introducing new management arrangements.
The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries has established a Barramundi Fishery Adjustment Committee that includes independent experts in fishery adjustment processes. The adjustment committee will oversee the buy-back scheme for commercial barramundi licences.
The committee has already reached a milestone, having commenced engagement with affected licence holders on the buy-back process.
Following the buy-back process, the reform of the barramundi fishery will focus on developing a modern management framework to deliver long-term community benefit and best use of the resource, including future objectives, access arrangements and management settings.
The department is also progressing alternative gear trials to inform whether any future commercial barramundi access could be supported.
The removal of gill nets applies only to the current commercial barramundi fishery and does not affect other fisheries, licence types or sectors.
