Tackling Fusarium wilt in Top End snake beans
The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) has launched a 5-year, internally funded initiative titled Breeding better vegetables, aimed at addressing Fusarium wilt, a serious disease affecting snake bean production in the Darwin region.
Snake bean is a major Asian vegetable crop grown in the Top End, valued for both local consumption and commercial production. However, productivity is increasingly threatened by Fusarium wilt, a persistent soil-borne fungal disease that causes plant wilting, decline, and often death, leading to significant losses for growers.
Compounding the issue, Fusarium wilt can survive in the soil for extended periods, making it difficult to control and limiting reliable crop establishment.
To combat this, DAF has initiated a targeted breeding trial focused on developing improved snake bean varieties with enhanced resistance to Fusarium wilt. The goal is to combine this resistance with the desirable market traits of the locally grown commercial snake bean variety green pod kaohsiung (GPK).
The breeding strategy involves crossing the GPK snake bean with cowpea genotypes known to possess natural resistance to Fusarium wilt. This process is time-intensive with crossing and careful selection.
Each stage involves rigorous testing to ensure that resulting lines maintain both disease resistance and the agronomic and market traits growers depend on.
Crossbred lines produced through the program will be screened under controlled glasshouse conditions and evaluated in field trials to assess their resistance to Fusarium wilt.
The most promising candidates will then be assessed across multiple field sites to measure their performance under local growing conditions, including yield, adaptability; and disease resistance.
While the development of a new, stable variety can take several years, this initiative represents an important step toward improving the resilience and sustainability of snake bean production in the Northern Territory.
