Supporting the next generation of researchers through industry internships
The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) has been recognised with a Certificate of Appreciation from Edith Cowan University (ECU) for its contribution to developing the next generation of research scientists.
The acknowledgement follows the successful completion of an industry-based research placement by PhD candidate Hamad Hassan at the Katherine Research Station (KRS).
During his internship, Hamad worked with DAF’s Plant Industries team where he undertook specialised training in the safe-use and operation of the Controlled Atmosphere (CA) storage setup at KRS. This hands on experience provided Hamad with technical capabilities and the opportunity to engage with industry and grower partners in the region.
The internship was designed to build practical, industry-aligned skills, complementing Hamad’s academic research, bridging the gap between university-based study and real world agriculture practice. Through projects at KRS, he gained valuable exposure to the operational demands, research workflows and collaborative networks that support Australia’s agricultural innovation pipeline.
Initiatives like this strengthen partnerships between government, industry and universities. Such collaborations not only provide students with access to advanced research facilities and experienced mentors but also help ensure that agricultural research remains closely connected to industry needs.
DAF is proud to support the next generation of scientists to drive innovation in Australia’s agriculture sector and we look forward to continuing to foster agricultural research excellence for the Territory.
