Congratulations to Dr Sonu Yadav, winner of the STEM category at the NT News Woman of the Year Awards 2026.

Sonu’s work as a principal molecular scientist with the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries is helping advance biosecurity research and strengthen the sustainability of Northern Territory plant industries.

Sonu has published innovative research on next‑generation DNA sequencing technologies to strengthen biosecurity outcomes and has helped establish an advanced molecular laboratory in Darwin.

Named the 2025 NT STEM Hero of the Year, Sonu is also a passionate mentor for the next generation of scientists, delivering more than 60 STEM workshops across northern Australia including remote NT communities, inspiring young people - particularly girls and women - to pursue careers in science and technology.

Sonu said she is hugely honoured to receive this recognition.

“I love science, discussing it and sharing it with a wider audience. I hope to make science more accessible and inclusive so that more young people, especially those from underrepresented groups, can see themselves in this field and contribute to protecting our biodiversity and ecosystems.”

This latest award for Sonu Yadav is well-deserved recognition for her leadership, innovation and contribution to STEM.
