Do you keep livestock — even just one animal or a pet

Published

If you keep livestock on your property, you must have a registered Property Identification Code (PIC).

What counts as livestock

Livestock include (but are not limited to):

  • cattle (all bovine), bison, buffalo
  • deer, goats, sheep, llamas, alpacas, camels,
  • pigs (including wild pigs)
  • horses and other equines (ponies, miniature horses, mules, donkeys)
  • emu, ostrich
  • crocodiles
  • poultry (including chickens, ducks, geese, guinea fowl, peafowl, quail, turkeys, pigeons and other domestic poultry).

A PIC is required regardless of

  • property size (residential or rural)
  • number of animals (even just one)
  • whether animals are pets or agisted
  • whether livestock are kept short‑term or permanently.

If livestock are kept on the land, a PIC is required.

Register or update your PIC, or find more information about biosecurity management plans.
