About 1,000 industry representatives gathered in Darwin this week for the NT Cattlemen’s Association's 41st Annual Conference, the Territory’s biggest annual beef industry event. The NTCA is the Northern Territory’s leading primary industry body, representing over 90% of the region’s pastoral sector, and the conference provided a platform to discuss key challenges and opportunities, from biosecurity preparedness to trade expansion and livestock research.

The conference featured presentations on industry research, biosecurity response strategies, and regulatory compliance, as well as the latest work being done at research stations to mitigate the impact of buffalo flies.

The Northern Territory Government supports all pastoralists across the Northern Territory to increase profitability, resilience, and sustainability.

The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) facilitates sustainable economic growth across the Northern Territory while enhancing the Territory lifestyle. As a trusted industry partner and balanced regulator, DAF drives economic growth and market access for the Territory’s agricultural sector.

The livestock industry is the Territory’s largest agricultural sector by economic value and land area.

The role of the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, Livestock Industries branch is to:

  • undertake research, development, extension, and advisory services to enhance productivity, profitability and sustainability of the NT livestock industries, and
  • build industry capacity through the through the delivery of evidence-based advice, industry events and training.

Key activities include:

  • research in cattle nutrition, genetics, breeding, management, health and welfare, pasture management and emerging technologies
  • extension services and events for industry such as providing technical and carrying capacity advice, producing the quarterly NT Pastoral Feed Outlook, conducting field days, and rangeland management courses
  • working closely with industry groups, including Regional Research Pastoral Industry Advisory Committees, and
  • community involvement through agricultural shows, school visits and other local events.
