Coastal Plains Research Farm Field Day

Industry stakeholders, researchers, and members of the public gathered at the Coastal Plains Research Farm (CPRF) for a morning of presentations and on-farm demonstrations that highlighted key agricultural research projects in the Darwin region.

Hosted by the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries Plant Industries team, the event formed part of the biennial 2025 Northern Australia Food Futures Conference and offered attendees valuable insights into a range of innovative agricultural initiatives tailored to the NT’s unique climate and conditions.

Presentations covered advancements in jackfruit post-harvest management, the use of cotton waste as a sustainable growth medium for mushrooms, and updates on the caged fruit fly and fall armyworm research projects. Attendees also received a live grafting demonstration and an update on the latest industry developments.

Attendees also explored on-site plantings and engaged with researchers working on cutting-edge solutions for Northern Territory agriculture. The event began with a field walk and a concluded with a networking lunch, giving participants a chance to learn more and share ideas.

The Coastal Plains Research Farm field day was an ancillary activity to the 2025 Northern Australia Food Futures Conference, which took place on 8 and 9 April at the Darwin Convention Centre. Themed Innovative Agribusiness in Northern Australia: Nurturing Natural Assets for Future Growth, the conference drew more than 3,000 delegates from industry, research, and government.

The Northern Territory Government is a major sponsor of the event with the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, together with industry, continuing to play a pivotal role in supporting plant research and development and managing biosecurity threats for the continued sustainable growth of the Territory’s agriculture sector.
