Celebrate National Barramundi Day - #AskForAussieBarra

Published

In 2024, the Northern Territory produced around 100 tonnes of wild caught and over 3,600 tonnes of farmed barramundi.

Australia’s barramundi producers have plenty to celebrate this year, with new Country of Origin Labelling laws for hospitality businesses mandatory nationwide from 1 July 2026.

These changes allow consumers to know if the Barramundi and seafood they order at restaurants and hospitality venues is Australian or imported.

The Northern Territory led the way, introducing seafood labelling regulations in November 2008 that made it mandatory for seafood retailers and hospitality businesses to identify imported seafood – the first jurisdiction to do so.

Whether it’s wild-caught in our coastal rivers or farmed in world-class, sustainable farms, if it’s called barramundi in the Territory – it should be the real thing.

Let’s back our local fishers, farmers and restaurants and #AskForAussieBarra this National Barramundi Day!
