Barkly’s future looks bright
Northern Territory public servant Jaymie Coleman is upbeat about the future of the Barkly.
“It’s an extremely exciting time for the region. We’re poised to take advantage of a lot of great economic opportunities.”
Jaymie is the Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade’s Barkly regional manager based in Tennant Creek.
A key part of her role is supporting local businesses and highlighting local capabilities to interstate and overseas mining and exploration companies.
“Any job that involves helping people achieve their goals interests me,” she said.
“The Barkly community is ready to determine their economic future and play a vital role in achieving it.”
The Barkly region is enjoying many exciting projects.
There are 8 mining and exploration projects, including drilling for oil and gas in the Beetaloo Basin.
The Barkly Regional Deal is in its 3rd year. The 10-year, $78.4 million agreement between the Australian Government, the Territory Government and the Barkly Regional Council aims to stimulate economic development in the region.
One of the 28 initiatives is the $2.4 million Barkly Business Hub which will house the Territory Business Centre in Tennant Creek. This one-stop shop will help existing and new business ventures and innovation, including supporting local businesses and local skills development. Experts at the hub will provide tailored advice and support to small firms and Aboriginal organisations to take up commercial opportunities.
Services to help link local businesses to developments in the mining and energy sectors in the region will also be based at the hub.
