Dates
Date palms have been grown in Australia for over 100 years, however it is still considered a niche or emerging industry worth around $2 million annually. The Arid Zone Research Institute (AZRI) hosts one of the largest germplasm collections in the southern hemisphere.
Taking the Australian date industry forward with locally sourced tissue cultured planting material
Date palm has huge growth potential in the central region of the Northern Territory. Plant Industries contributed in development of the Australian Date Palm RD&E Plan (2023-2028). Following that, working with the peak dates industry, this project aims to trial a tissue culture protocol for date palms in Australian conditions.

Australian Date Palm RD&E Plan (2023-2028)
This project concluded in 2023.
The development of a Research, Development and Extension (RD&E) Plan is a crucial step for emerging industries identifying opportunities, barriers to industry growth, and subsequent priorities for the industry.
The Australian date palm RD&E plan is the result of extensive stakeholder consultation across the industry pulling together specific recommendations for future investment to support the long-term growth and competitive advantage of the industry.
The plan also includes a DAF NT literature review on poor fruit set, integrated pest management options for Parlatoria date scale, fruit drop, rain damage and the impacts of climate change to collate existing knowledge on these topics.

The 2019 Date Growers Forum was held in Alice Springs. This forum looked at recent date research and development and finished with a session on future research questions and potential future options for the AZRI date germplasm collection. The presentations and notes from the forum are available below.
