Entomology

The Entomology section provides a range of entomological services to growers, government departments, householders, home gardeners and the general public.

These include:

  • arthropod identification and advice including arthropods of quarantine concern
  • taxonomic studies on economic pests
  • curation and updating of the Economic Insect Reference Collection
  • maintenance of a database of insect records
  • information and advice on insect monitoring and integrated pest management
  • development of integrated pest management of a range of crops
  • biology and control of termite pests of horticultural crops
  • surveys to detect and manage exotic arthropods
  • pest distribution information for market access
  • relevant advice on pesticide registration and development
  • agro-forestry pests.

If you need help identifying a pest or obtaining information on the damage it can cause, or its biology please visit the department's Northern Territory insects database.

Searches are available for insect pests of crops in the Northern Territory using various criteria such as; insect name (common name or scientific name), host plant, type of damage or scientific classification. Fact sheets are created in real time using the information in an underlying database which is updated as new information and images become available. Once you have found the information you require you are able to print the text or the images as required.

HLB is regarded as one of the most important threats to the citrus industry in the world. It is estimated that tens of million of citrus trees have been destroyed by HLB (Crop Protection Compendium 2007).
